One of the oldest forms of communication is print medium. For over a hundred years our lives have revolved around it, and it is virtually impossible to go throughout your day without being affected by some form of it. Although print has made its place in our world, today there is another form of communication competing for the spotlight.
Digital comunicae is only about 30 years old but it is already amassed a large corner of the communications industry and our lives. The computer and the development of the internet have reached a place in communication history only imagined by Gutenberg and his printing press.
In the year 2006, the computer and the growing technology used in communication will reach an equivalent of what the Industrial Revolution was to those living the the early 19th century. I beleive that we have just scratched the surface of what technology will bring to us in the near future.
As the internet has developed from the text based pages of netscape navigator to full streaming video and dynamically created content by the user on any number of internet browsers, designers and anyone wanting to share their message with the world have begun to realise the creative and communicative avenue that the internet pocesses. Suddenly, designers, businesses, news media giants, or anyone at all found a new outlet for communication and the creative process alike.
You can find anything on any topic on the internet today. There is no limit to the ammount and kind of information that is available on the largest network of computers known to man. The internet has re-written all the rules in more than one sphere of society.
Not only has the Internet changed our world, but now we can add Blogging and Podcasting to the mass of information that is contained on the World Wide Web. Bloggers and Podcasters alike have changed the way we look at mass media. The Internet provides anything you wanted on any topic at the click of a button, but now people’s personal lives and opinions are available via Blogs and Podcasts, without charge and with minimal effort. As Evangelical Christians, we can use this to our advantage. If Grandma Sally can share her recipes with the world, we can certainly share the Gospel.
With multiple forms of communication available for us to use, there is little difficulty having the Gospel readily available. CCC, among other organizations, takes advantage of that. Our website www.EveryStudent.com presents the Gospel clearly, through apologetics, testimonies and multimedia presentations.
We have found that 1% of visitors to the site indicate decisions for Christ and with over 500,000 visitors every month, that amounts to 5000 first time decisions and rededications every month! Our biggest obstacle is letting people know where and what this website, and many more like it are. This is something I hope to help overcome.
These new technologies allow us to reach more people in more ways, where they are. When I start my work with the Regional team, I will be using my design skills to maximize our contact with others in order to meet the needs of those seeking truth.
